For today’s installment of #30DaysofRomComs, we’ve got one of my favorite YA contemporary authors, Katie Cotugno, here to to tell us about her favorite rom com. Katie is the author of How to Love and the NYT Bestselling 99 Days, so she knows from romance. And if you follow her on Twitter, you definitely know she knows funny, too. I’m so excited to get to see her next weekend when I’m in Boston for Boston Teen Author Festival, and hopefully get some inside scoop on her forthcoming novel, Fireworks.
You’ve Got Mail is the I Ching. You’ve Got Mail is the sum of all wisdom. You’ve Got Mail is the answer to any question. What shall I put on the canapes at my next cocktail party? “That caviar is a garnish!” What are you up to this weekend? “I’m going to the nut shop where it’s fun.” Where are we going to live once we realize there’s no way the proprietor of a children’s bookstore could afford a beautiful, shabby-chic apartment on the Upper West Side? “Hello, New Jersey!” The answer to your question is, You’ve Got Mail is my very favorite romcom. I love everything about it, from Meg Ryan’s potato sack dresses to the plinky, earnest soundtrack to the blink-and-you-miss-it cameo by Chris Messina. It makes me feel happy and safe and nostalgic for the sweet, sweet sound of dial-up internet. It makes me feel, like Joe Fox tells Kathleen Kelly as he leans dashingly over the counter in her beautiful, fictional bookstore, enchanted.
You can never EVER go wrong with a Nora Ephron movie, I say. And it makes me DOUBLY excited that we’re going to livetweet You’ve Got Mail coming up (rain-checked from Sunday night because life happened, as it does!).
Today’s #30DaysofRomComs giveaway is a copy of a Katie Cotugno book of your choice! You can pick from a paperback of How to Love, a hardcover of 99 Days, or a pre-order of her latest novel, Fireworks, out April 18, 2017. To enter, leave a comment below with your favorite rom com. Winner will be chosen at random on Sept 30, US only.
From Katie Cotugno, bestselling author of 99 Days, comes Fireworks—about a girl who is competing with her best friend to become the new pop star of the moment—and all the drama and romance that comes with it—set in Orlando during the late-’90s boy-and-girl-band craze.
It was always meant to be Olivia. She was the talented one, the one who had been training to be a star her whole life. Her best friend, Dana, was the level-headed one, always on the sidelines, cheering her best friend along.
But everything changes when Dana tags along with Olivia to Orlando for the weekend, where superproducer Guy Monroe is holding auditions for a new singing group, and Dana is discovered too. Dana, who’s never sung more than Olivia’s backup. Dana, who wasn’t even looking for fame. Next thing she knows, she and Olivia are training to be pop stars, and Dana is falling for Alex, the earnest, endlessly talented boy who’s destined to be the next big thing.
It should be a dream come true, but as the days of grueling practice and constant competition take their toll, things between Olivia and Dana start to shift . . . and there’s only room at the top for one girl. For Olivia, it’s her chance at her dream. For Dana, it’s a chance to escape a future that seems to be closing in on her. And for these lifelong best friends, it’s the adventure of a lifetime—if they can make it through.
Set in evocative 1990s Orlando, New York Times bestselling author Katie Cotugno’s Fireworks brings to life the complexity of friendship, the excitement of first love, and the feeling of being on the verge of greatness.

Hooray for romcoms! My favorite is usually whatever is on, but if I am forced to choose, I’ll go with Serendipity. It’s ethereal and improbable, so it fosters true escapism.
Wow, I don’t know if I can pick a favorite romcom?! Sixteen Candles or Say Anything, maybe? I will always watch How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days when it’s on TV (even though I own the DVD) so maybe that’s my favorite?
Wow!!! The very first rom com that popped in my head is It’s a Boy Girl Thing. The story is that this high school football star and the smartest/preppiest girl in class have been neighbors ever since they were born. And their parents are total oppsites. For some reason, they were paired up together for a project and after visiting a museum, they came across a relic that switched their bodies! Quite cliche don’t you think? But the way the story goes is so funny and the lessons and the messages in the movie are the best! Just the growth of each person is so beautiful and the journey they took together to fix the issue is just adorable. This movie is actually one of my favorite movies ever!
BTW, i love the plot for Fireworks!!! Looking forward to this book!
I haven’t seen that one! Definitely going to put it on my list. Thanks!
You really should! It’s a must-watch! For me anyway 🙂 just talking about it just makes me remember their love story! When you get the chance to watch it, i really hope you like it!!
YOU’VE GOT MAIL is one of my favorite movies of all time. I love it so, so much. And it would’ve been my choice as well but to mix up (& sheesh, this is one hard decision!), I’ll go with WHEN HARRY MET SALLY, another Meg Ryan/Nora Ephron classic. I think that the New Year’s Eve scene at the end (which will always make me cry), is one of the best movie moments all of time. And makes me nostalgic for NYC during the holidays ❤ This was a great post & an awesome feature! Thanks for the opportunity to enter to win the giveaway.
That movie is SO quotable. I love it!
I LOVE ROMANTIC COMEDIES. You’ve Got Mail is one of my all-time favorites, too! But I have to say Serendipity is the actual best. I love the idea of fate and this movie just encompasses it so, so well. Plus Kate Beckinsale and her super cute British accent.
I love Serendipity too! And I haven’t watched it in so long … gonna have to queue it up soon!
YOU’VE GOT MAIL is SO cute, and it’s been forever since I’ve seen it. I totally need to catch up on my classics! I’ve undoubtedly always favored The Proposal. I try & watch it anytime it’s on. I adore both Sandra Bullock & Ryan Reynolds. They’re hilarious and such a swoon-worthy pair. But if I had to choose something more vintage, Audrey Hepburn’s Sabrina, it is. It’s so sweet and lovely and the fashion is phenomenal.
Have you seen the Sabrina remake? I’m usually not a fan of remakes, but that one is great. Julia Ormond is such a great Sabrina, and I love Harrison Ford as Linus!
I really love You’ve Got Mail. I also recently watched The Decoy Bride and thought it was so adorable.
Congrats! You win a copy of a Katie Cotugno book!! Just email me at laurenmorrill at outlook dot com with a mailing address and which book you’d like (How to Love, 99 Days, or a pre-order of Fireworks), and I’ll get that sent to you!
My favorite is probably When Harry Met Sally or 27 Dresses. I love all rom coms though!
My favorite is the movie Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist. I’ve seen it so many times and it’s so funny and so adorable, too. I can watch it over and over.
