I don’t think anyone has ever asked me a single one of these questions, so clearly I’m taking a bit of artistic license with the use of the word “frequently.” But hey, this is my website.
Where are you from?
I was born in Pensacola, FL on a naval base, then proceeded to move all over the place (my dad was a Marine). In the second grade my parents got divorced, and my mom took my brother and me to Maryville, TN. I lived there until I went to college.
Where did you go to school?
I have a BA in history and an MS in higher education administration, both from Indiana University.
Wait, so you didn’t go to school for writing?
Nope, though technically getting a history degree involves a fat lot of writing. Most of what I’ve learned about writing comes from exactly two places: 1) Reading Reading Reading and 2) Working with Lexa and Laura at Paper Lantern Lit.
How long have you wanted to be a writer?
Um, for forever? From the time I read my very first book? Honestly, I think it was the first time I read Judy Blume’s Just As Long As We’re Together. I started banging out my own “novels” on the word processors my mom brought home from her office. Though I’ve started many MANY books, Meant to Be is the first one I’ve ever finished. The first of many!
What do you do now?
When I’m not writing books or playing roller derby, I work in admissions at the Kennedy School of Government. I live in Cambridge with my husband, Adam (who is a producer and reporter at WBUR, Boston’s NPR station) and my dog Lucy (who is practically my child).
When can I buy Meant to Be?
MTB releases on November 13, 2012. As soon as it appears for pre-order on Amazon (or anywhere else, for that matter), I’ll post.
Have you ever been injured playing roller derby?
During the 2009 season I threw out my back, which was the worst pain I’ve ever had in my life. I’ve also had one or two minor concussions. Other than that, I’ve been lucky!
How did you pick your derby name?
It wasn’t easy, that’s for sure. There’s a world-wide derby name registry, and you can’t have the same name as any other skater in the WHOLE WIDE WORLD. My name came to me when I heard Nazareth’s “Love Hurts” on the radio. I’m sort of a prissy-looking roller girl (though on the track, I’m tough!), so I thought it kind of fit. My teammate and bestie Maude Forbid says I’m a sassy player, so the name works for me!
Who are your favorite authors?

What are your favorite TV shows?
